The Shiva eye itself is not a snail or mussel, as is often wrongly assumed, but rather a kind of protective door of the tropical turban or gyro snail (lat. Turbinidae). This means that if the snail is threatened by its natural enemies, it closes the door and can thereby protect its life. This also explains the Latin name of the Shiva eye. It is operculum = lid. The gyro snail lives at depths of up to 20 m in the sea and feeds on algae that grows on corals or stones. The spiral shape of the Shiva eye on the one hand and the individual color gradient on the other hand reflect the growth of the snail. The different structures and color nuances arise depending on how regularly and which algae the animal consumes. The spiral also indicates growth. Perhaps this is why the shape of the spiral is a magical shape in so many cultures, symbolizing movement, progress and infinity.
